About Jumbo Acoustic Guitars
The clue is in the name: the jumbo acoustic guitar size is the biggest size of acoustic. Synonymous with the Gibson SJ200, and more recently its Epiphone spin off, the jumbo guitar is the ultimate rock ‘n’ roll acoustic.
Because of the huge size, you need to beat jumbo acoustic guitars quite hard to produce any noise. This means they are not particularly well suited to fingerpicking but are magical for heavy-handed strumming!
The bigger the size of an acoustic, the more bass response the guitar has. This means that the jumbo has a full, deep voice. Manufacturers often compensate for this by pairing them with quite bright woods to create a balanced tone. This is what you find with the SJ-200 which pairs the jumbo size with a spruce top and maple back and sides; producing a surprisingly even sound.
Jumbos excel in situations where there is an acoustic guitar in the context of a full band. This is why they’ve famously been sported by rockers like Noel Gallagher and Pete Townshend.
