What we say:

At A Glance:

This Epiphone Thunderbird Vintage finished in Pro Tobacco Sunburst is a faithful reproduction of the Gibson original from 1963. With its neck-through construction, tight low-end punch and head-turning appearance, the Thunderbird is without a doubt a classic and has been used by many iconic rock players, including Krist Novoselic, Lemmy, Kim Gordon and Adam Clayton

Features We Love:

Stand-Out Style

First introduced in 1963, the Thunderbird was designed by auto designer Raymond H. Dietrich as Gibson's first set neck bass. Mimicking the swooping rear fenders of cars from the late 50s and early 60s, the Thunderbird has a bold design that has remained timeless throughout the decades

1960's Rounded NeckProfile

This model benefits from a 'rounded' neck shape which is slightly larger and sits nicely in your hand while you play. Offering access to the whole fretboard, the 'Rounded' shape continues to offer comfort over extended sessions where slimmer necks may not.

ProBucker Pickups

The Epiphone ProBucker takes the best qualities from the finest vintage pickups to offer an authentic tone that has fooled even the keenest ears. The pickups feature a detailed character that combines the full low-end tone of the bass's large body with some high-end clarity to give that punchy sound the Thunderbird is loved for.

Highlights:

  • Timeless headturning looks
  • Big punchy tone that works well for rock music

Customer reviews

The closest thing to a 60s Thunderbird you'll find for sensible money. The neck in particular is more akin to a Fender Jazz - 1.5" at the nut- and a 9 ply laminate all through as it should be. Pickups are streets ahead of the bolt on Epis, as is the bridge and tailpiece though the originals were set about an inch further back. Neck is too straight with 45-100s, I'll put 45-105s on before I think about relaxing the truss rod a tad. Not too much neck dive though a grippy strap laid over the top bout makes it much more playable. Decent mushroom strap buttons. Finish and fretting fine, full size pots though I had to resolder the braided shield on the back of one of the pots. Jack position is on the edge rather than the front. A cracking bass. As a luthier I would struggle to make this for the money.
