What we say:

At A Glance:

As part of the new Ibanez AZ Essentials series, the AZES 40 helps to redefine what's possible in an "affordable" guitar.

We all remember days gone by when "starter" and "affordable" meant a guitar's quality was ..... ropey at best. No more. The Ibanez AZES 40 aims to change all this with an instrument that bears all the quality and features Ibanez are known for at a fantastic price. Built with the novice musician in mind, this guitar sports three superb Ibanez Essentials pickups (a Humbucker in the Bridge position and Singlecoils in the Middle and Neck) with a 5-way Switch and Dyna-MIX9 switching system for a host of sounds, plus the fantastic T106 tremolo bridge and 25" scale.

Features We Love:

A New Level of Quality

Ibanez decided they were tired of the trope of "affordable" and "beginner" guitars being of poor quality for the sake of price. The AZES 40, and the whole AZ Essentials Series correct this by delivering a feature packed, Ibanez quality instrument, that's still designed with the novice in mind, at a fantastic price.

Ibanez Essentials Pickups and dyna-MIX9 Switching

The AZES40 features an Ibanez Essentials Humbucker in the bridge position and Ibanez Essentials Singlecoils in the Middle and Neck, with a 5-way-switch, giving you the classic 5 positions common to HSS guitars. This is augmented with the dyna-MIX9 switching system with Alter Switch. This expands your tonal options with choices like Neck and Middle wired in series like a humbucker instead of parallel, or having one coil of the Bridge and Neck pickups on together like a T-Style guitar. This gives you a hugely expanded array of tones to play with over a standard HSS setup, and over any other "beginner" guitar!

Beginner Friendly Measurements

The AZES40 has been designed with the beginner in mind. The 25" scale length is a little shorter than that traditionally found in lighter weight, 3-pickup double cutaway guitars, making it a little more accessible for inexperienced hands. The 250mm/9.8" fretboard radius makes forming chords at the lower end of the fretboard a doddle while leaving keeping things clear up the top for effortless lead work and string bending.

Highlights:

  • 3 High Quality Ibanez Essentials Singlecoil Pickups
  • dyna-MIX9 switching lets you access a host of extra tones
  • Dependable Ibanez T106 tremolo bridge
  • High quality hardware and construction throughout
  • Built with the beginner in mind
  • Redefines what an "affordable" guitar means in quality

Customer reviews

Overall Rating 4.5/5 (2 reviews)

The guitar is great - now I have done a set up on it. There were several issues out of the box. Neck was too flat action was too high and the tuner nuts were loose. As this is aimed at a beginner end of the market I think it is more important that the set up is spot on to keep players interested. Personally I am really happy with the guitar.
