What we say:
At A Glance:
The Boss RE-202 Space Echo takes the sound, look and feel of the iconic Roland RE-201 Space Echo unit and distills it down into a pedal a fraction of the size of the original unit.
Thanks to Boss's innovative circuit modelling technology, fans of vintage style reverb and echo will absolutely love how close the RE-202 sounds to the original, and just like the RE-201, a huge range of multi-head tape echo sounds can be dialled in.
The RE-202 recreates the front panel from the original Space Echo, but adds some new features that will appeal to the modern musician. Welcome additions like user memory storage, the ability to select between the tone of new and old tape, wow & flutter controls and the option to add expression pedals and control the pedal via MIDI really allow you to get the most out of having the RE-202 as part of your pedalboard or studio.
If you want to add the authentic vintage echo tones of the RE-201 to your pedalboard set-up, here it is for the first time in the benchmark quality standard you expect from a Boss pedal.
Features We Love:
Spring Reverb Tones
Just like the vintage Space Echo, the RE-202 lets you blend between its stunning reverb and echo sounds. The reverb side of the pedal delivers realistic spring style reverbs that when used solo, evokes an authentic vintage character that can also be mixed with the echo to create huge ethereal tones.
Tape Echo
The Echo section is really where the Space Echo comes into its own and allows you to dial in everything from rhythmic delays that can match your playing thanks to the tap tempo control, to slap-back echoes, long dreamy repeats and even self-oscillating feedback freakouts.
The sound of multi-head tape echo is instantly recognisable for its warm tone and the RE-202 lets you set your point of saturation to achieve awesome sounding magnetic tape compression and colouration.
One of our favourite features of the RE-202 is the ability to select between the tone of new and aged tape. With new tape offering analog warmth with precise repeats, the aged tape setting will bring a whole new character to your sound, adding artefacts and grit to your signal that can really take your tone to the extreme
Wow & Flutter
Unlike standard digital delay pedals that can often sound clinical, the Wow & Flutter controls really bring the sound of the RE-202 to life! Recreating the sound of analog tape drifting faster and slower to create a chorus like tone, Wow & Flutter can be used subtly with the echo and reverb to create a synthwave like wash, or more aggressively to take you into shoegaze territory.
Save and Recall
The ability to save and recall your sounds really allows you to get the most out of the huge range of sounds you can create using the Space Echo. Up to 4 sounds can be recalled using the RE-202 as a stand-alone pedal, and up to a whopping 127 patches can be stored and accessed using a MIDI controller.
More Than a Guitar Pedal
Just like the vintage Space Echo, the RE-202 is designed for use with a range of sources and gives you the option to run in mono or stereo. Meaning it can be used with keyboards and synthesizers, or even used as an insert effect in-studio applications.
