What we say:

At A Glance:

This TRBX504 in Trans Black boasts a lot of features for an affordable guitar. Targeted towards experienced players and those looking to step up from their first guitar, the TRBX504 features a mahogany body, a 5 piece maple and mahogany neck, humbucking pickups and an active pre-amp and EQ circuit. This combination represents Yamaha's decades of making instruments at the highest quality and it's hard to find another guitar at this price point to rival its sound and feel.

*9 Volt battery not included.

Features We Love:

Mahogany Body

Mahogany is loved for its rich tone and weighty feel, this makes it ideal for bass guitars and it's a fantastic combination with the humbucking pickups and preamp which can take the guitar everywhere from silky warm tones to an aggressive punch.

Humbucking Pickups

The pickups have been designed to capture a very wide frequency range, the low end is captured accurately, present without sounding woolly and mid range and high frequencies are crisp and detailed.

Active Circuit

With the wide frequency range captured by the pickups, the active circuit allows you to sculpt this into the exact tone you're looking for. The 3-band EQ allow you to easily carve out any unwanted frequencies and the pre-amp and be turned on and off via a switch, offering both vintage and modern tones. This makes the guitar incredibly versatile, if you're changing from fingers to picks, jazz to metal, or popping and slapping, this bass can be whatever you need it to be.

Highlights:

  • An affordable yet high quality instrument
  • Versatile range of tones

I dont have a great deal to go on here as this is my first Bass. Having never held or played bass before and really only messed about with guitar 20 odd years ago i had to choose a brand i knew - been riding Yamahas all my life so for me it made sense. Build quality i guess only time will tell but i love it, it feels good, looks fantastic, sounds like a Bass and seems to make all the right noises - most of the time LOL. I want to learn to play Bass, read some reviews, watched a couple of videos, didn't compare with others, all i knew is that i needed to be excited by my choice, yamaha have always delivered that and i am very pleased that this TRBX504 is no exception

Nice bass. On the heavy side. If I could go back in time I'd get a glossy finish as the matt marks up with sweat from fingers quite easily. I feel that it has to be handled quite carefully in order not to scratch or mark it. But then I'm the type of autist who barely opens a book for fear of damaging the spine. If you have that personality type, get a glossy finish. If you're a barbarian, get this.

A fantastic, quality instrument for the money. Still getting used to the higher output pickups and active EQ, but so many options for tone. Neck is a pleasure to play. Satin and slim. Only niggle is the recommended height of pickups seems very close to strings and when finger playing there's quite a lot of 'clank' that some players might not like. These can be lowered of course. Overall a deceptively 'high end' feeling bass for the money. And despite looks, if you're willing to play with the onboard EQ section etc capable of tones to fit all genres.
