What we say:
Roland have always been trailblazers in the world of the guitar synth. Since players like Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew decided to explore new territories with their newly acquired GR-300 systems back in the early 80s, guitar synthesis has been an area for maverick players and artists prepared to push the envelope forward in terms of art and expression.
Guitar Synths allow you to perform note groupings and pitches that are otherwise impossible, not to mention tones and textures that are completely un-guitar-like! Guitar synthesis has come a long way since the early 80s and can be considered a viable and powerful asset to the bold guitarist seeking new sonic landscapes.
The GR-55 is Roland's most advanced guitar synthesis unit yet. Tracking, always an issue with guitars, has been improved greatly and pitch detection has been refined with new technology to be more accurate than ever. The actual sounds contained within are top class and very varied: there are over 900 sounds on here from strings and brass to vintage 'analogue' synths, ethnic instruments and a whole range of unorthodox tones, textures and rhythmic pulses.
Power like this requires a special type of pickup to turn the raw audio into data. Roland's own GK-3 is the industry standard model so you'll need to already have one of these if you buy this option (we have another option to buy the GR-55 together with a GK-5 in a pack too). It's a hexaphonic pickup that slides under your strings near the bridge and has it's own raised control panel that sits on top of your guitar. Not everybody will love that but others like the sci-fi modded look and we reckon it's a small price to pay for such exotic power.
