The maestro is back! Well, he never really went away, but Yes mastermind Steve Howe is soon to release his first solo album in 5 years (on Sept 27th, to be exact), and it’s a real odyssey!

This is hot on the heels of a return-to-form album from Yes, in the guise of 2023’s Mirror to the Sky. Both releases see the guitarist shooting into multiple stratospheres with his highly distinctive and accomplished guitar playing. The new record, Guitarscape, is a very accessible and colourful instrumental release that focuses on mood, texture, and the relationship between the guitar and synthesizer. Whilst Howe’s trademark prog inflections are very much to the fore, they are held within the context of songs that are surprisingly succinct, making the entire record an easily digestible chunk of cosmic instrumental music. It’s a very enjoyable listen, and one that will appeal to perhaps an even wider audience than his core Yes fans.

Steve and I have spoken previously and covered a number of topics, so interested parties may want to have a read of my original Steve Howe Interview before checking out today’s video. For those who are up to speed, though, please dive in and enjoy this exclusive conversation on guitars, composition, melody and much more, from one of the finest guitarists in rock. Steve is in fine form, with lots of energy and enthusiasm, and even a folder full of recording notes! It’s all here, so dive in and enjoy!

My thanks top Steve for giving such a fun and stimulating conversation! Guitarscape is out on 27th September, so keep an eye out for it wherever you get your music. Also, head along to the offical Steve Howe website for lots more, and of course the Yes website for news of upcoming tours.
