Published on 01 July 2024

The sweet sounding Celtic guitar, dreamy melodies, and lilting jig rhythms… Folk music lovers, mark your calendars: on July 17th guitarguitar Glasgow will host an exclusive masterclass, in association with Martin, run by two of the UK’s finest folk players: Jenn Butterworth & Laura-Beth Salter!

Who Are Jenn Butterworth & Laura-Beth Salter?

Jenn Butterworth lives and breathes trad guitar (she swears by her trusty Martin D-41).

As an exceptional accompanist and one of the most in-demand musicians in Scotland, Jenn has played with artists such as David Foley & Jack Smedley (RURA), Treacherous Orchestra to name a few.

She is also a lecturer and a creative producer in the Traditional Music Department of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

She has recently been awarded ‘Musician of the Year’ at the Scots Trad Music Awards, and was nominated for an award of the same title at the BBCRadio 2 Folk Awards.

Laura-Beth Salter is a top-notch mandolin player and a singer, a founding member of renowned folk band The Shee and has also toured extensively with bands such as Shooglenifty and Dougie MacLean’s ‘The MacLeanProject’. In 2013 Salter was nominated for the MG Alba Scots Trad Awards Composer of the Year award after the success of her Celtic Connections debut.

Both Jenn and Laura-Beth are both founding members of award winning Kinnaris Quintet, who have already taken the folk scene by storm performing at Cambridge Folk Festival, Heb Celt Fest, Skye Live and Celtic Connections.

What’s This Event All About?

Jenn and Laura-Beth are going to host an exciting folk masterclass where they will talk about their careers on the trad scene, play & sing some of their originally composed tunes and get into the details of techniques for both of their instruments: guitar and mandolin.

Both artists will explore the tunings commonly used in traditional folk music, demonstrating flatpicking and strumming technique on guitar and mandolin as well as teach the audience about the secret of keeping up with the jigs and reels’ time signatures whilst driving rhythm.

Jenn and Laura-Beth will also go into the topic of composition and arrangement in folk music and finally run an open Q&A session with the audience.

Courtesy of Martin, there will be even some free swag given away, too!
