What size guitar is good for kids?

As a very general rule, ¾ size electric guitars are ideal for children between the ages of 7 to 10. It’s less to do with age than with height, so tall children will be able to progress to full size instruments quicker than smaller children. The important thing is being able to reach the first frets comfortably.

When will my child need a full size guitar?

Your child will most likely be tall enough for a full size guitar at the age of around 10 or 11. This is not a hard and fast rule but instead is a rough guide that depends upon the height of each child.

Are 3/4 sized electric guitars good for adults?

The most important thing about any guitar is that you want to play it. You might want to play a guitar for the look, the comfort or the sound. ¾ guitars are definitely comfortable but often not of the highest quality because they are designed only with young children in mind. The Fender Mustang is a famous example of a guitar that was introduced as a short scale student guitar but became hugely popular among adults, so they are available at a higher quality than most ¾ size electric guitars.

How big are 3/4 sized guitars?

The way we measure guitars is by measuring the scale length. The scale length is the playable length of string. We do this rather than measuring the total length because electric guitars come in all different shapes and sizes which does not necessarily affect how big it feels to play. The scale length for a ¾ size electric guitar is often around 23”.
