About Ukuleles

Ukuleles are small, portable, easy-to- pick-up and play, instruments. Originally popularized in and associated with Hawaii, these extremely fun instruments have been used by a range of musicians from all over the world. Ukuleles have enjoyed a huge resurgence in popularity in recent years. Small, easy to play and extremely fun, these portable instruments bring a little Hawaiian sunshine to your music. They are a great choice to accompany a solo vocal but can also work equally well in a band setting.

Similar to guitar, ukuleles commonly use woods for their body constructions to vibrate sound naturally emanating from the sound hole. Woods such as koa, cedar and spruce are used to produce their comforting complex tones. Ukulele tones are also determined by their size. They come in a few sizes, from small to large these are: soprano, concert, tenor and baritone ukuleles giving the deepest tones and most sustain.

In recent years their popularity continues to grow and still make an appearance within modern music with pop artist such as Billie Eilish using them and even having her own signature model ukulele made by Fender. Since they only have 4 strings, ukuleles can be a great entry point into string instruments but they are by no means just an option for beginners. Many artists from The Beatles and Eddie Vedder to comedian George Formby has had great success with tracks featuring the ukulele.

guitarguitar stores and website stock a wide range of ukes from top brands such as Alvarez, Freshman, Fender and Mahalo. These range from traditional looking ones to brightly coloured and highly decorated models. All guitarguitar stores carry a great selection of ukuleles for you to browse and try.

Why Should I Choose a Ukulele?

  • Easy and fun to play instruments
  • Beginner friendly Instrument
  • Distinct but recognisable sound
  • Unique identifiable sound
  • Portable and perfect for travelling

Frequently Asked Questions about Ukuleles

Question: Where is the ukulele from?
The traditional soprano ukulele is originally from Hawaii. In the 1910s and 1920s there was a ukulele boom in America. During this time the concert and tenor ukuleles were invented by American instrument makers.
Question: How many strings does a ukulele have?
A ukulele has 4 strings! These strings are made from nylon and are very soft on the fingers.
Question: Is the ukulele easy to learn?
The ukulele is very easy to learn with lots of chords requiring only one or two fingers. The hard thing about learning the guitar is that some chords require large stretches. Because the ukulele is so small, you don’t need to do this for ukulele chords.
Question: How much is a good ukulele?
Even £50 will get you a decent quality ukulele if you choose carefully. If you can spend £100, you’ll get a quality instrument that sounds great and stays in tune reliably.
Question: What type of ukulele is best for beginners?
The best type of ukulele for beginners is the soprano. Soprano ukuleles are popular due to their handy size making them great for beginners and children as, smaller hands can play chords more easily on these.
Question: Is ukulele easier than guitar?
Ukuleles are played by strumming chords in a similar way to playing guitar but could be easier, as they have nylon strings that is softer to press down onto with fingers. Overall ukuleles could be easier to learn as they have fewer frets and strings, usually 4 instead of 6, of a standard guitar.
Question: What ukulele brand is best?
There is a range of great brands of Ukuleles, one of the most popular choices would be the Mahalo. Other brands who are usually known for their guitars such as Fender, Ibanez and Alvarez also offer great sounding ukuleles.
Question: Which type of ukulele sounds the best?
Tenor Ukuleles are usually said to have the best sound as this size provides a rich and fuller tone due to its bigger body and longer strings. Performers prefer this size of ukulele for their full dynamic range to be heard and played in front of an audience or part of a group.
