Born Out Of Necessity
The world’s #1 electric guitar strings were born out of necessity in a small Southern California guitar shop opened by Ernie Ball in 1958. Ernie only wanted to sell guitars with a studio in the back for guitar lessons. Industry colleagues thought he was crazy. Undeterred, he persevered, and in time, this guitar-only store was a destination stop for many of the great guitar bands of the early 60s. Ernie noticed his young students had trouble fretting guitar chords on their instruments. Intuitively, he knew lighter gauge strings would make it easier to play. Ernie called Fender and Gibson, but no one listened. He then decided, “I'll do it myself.” In 1962, the famous Slinky electric guitar strings were born! New light gauge Slinky sets comprised of .009-.042” and .010-.046” gauge strings with their bright Day Glo packaging were an instant hit.

3 Generations of Makers
When Ernie created Slinkys in 1962, he did so with an unbridled, lifelong passion for the guitar. He didn’t have a fancy engineering or business degree. He loved music. He loved teaching students how to play the guitar and wanted to pass along his passion for the instrument. Like many products before his, Slinkys we’re born out recognizing an opportunity and executing a market need.
Paired with creating new recipes that allowed musicians to play lead guitar with more ease, he redefined what strings could feel and sound like. The timing of the British invasion and the emergence of rock and roll gave his strings a path to flourish. Alongside his son Sterling, together they worked tirelessly and for the decades that followed built a brand, company, and legacy that is recognized by musicians across the globe.
Now in its third generation with Brian Ball at the helm, the Ernie Ball company is evermore dedicated to preserving and continuing this legacy that drives everyone in our company today. From the introduction of Slinkys in 1962 to PARADIGM, the world’s most advanced guitar strings ever created, it is this passion behind the Ernie Ball’s family’s uncompromising commitment to innovation and tone that leads us to continue to innovate ways to enhance the player’s experience.
This commitment and dedication have led to multiple patents and patent-pending designs, including Paradigm Slinky, Cobalt Slinky, M-Steel Slinky, and Aluminum Bronze strings. Each of these technologies has placed a specific goal of engineering alloys to optimize the performance of the guitar string. As a result, guitarists and bassists now have unparalleled tonal options, allowing for even greater expression and playability.
Ernie Ball Strings have revolutionised the world of guitar since they were first manufactured. The company, founded by Roland Sherwood Ball, originally started as a guitar store in the 1950s and through sales and experience Roland Ball was able to identify troubles players had with standard string gauges.
Typically these early string sets had quite a high tension. While string manufacturers at the time weren't keen on making lighter gauges Roland Sherwood Ball took it upon himself to manufacture a set that was lighter, and easier to play. Roland Ball developed a string set with a plain third string and a slacker bottom string which was what many musicians of the time preferred and this became the infamous "Slinky" Set. This lighter set of strings quickly became a favourite for musicians and in 1967, Roland Ball moved to continue the development of his Ernie Ball strings in California.
These days Ernie Ball continues their development aiming to create a wide variety of string types and gauges for all players and applications.
